This project involved the preliminary design of a cultural museum, social service offices, leased office space, retail, and theme restaurant in the former Hamilton Counting and Store House. This circa 1700 mill located at 165 Jackson Street in Lowell, MA adjoins the Hamilton Canal and is listed on the National Register, the National of Historic Places and Lowell Historic District, Locks and Canals District and National Park. The existing mill structure consists of 100,000sf on four levels, and is typical masonry and bearing wall construction.
The facility was designed to support a market at the ground floor and basement, combining the retail space, restaurant, a museum and office lobby. The museum was located at the second floor above the street and social service offices on the third floor. The City of Lowell is reconstructing Jackson Street. The design encompassed development of design and guidelines and a proposed parking facility to be constructed by the city of Lowell. Additionally, the design reflects a connection with proposed trolley expansion and canal walk.
